6 Best Vibration Plates, According to Reviews and Experts
Looking to amp up your workout but not sure how? Or are you just bored of basic, expected gym equipment? The best vibration plates can help you with both of those conundrums and provide the added benefits of muscle recovery, rehabilitation, and balance practice for those who need it.
Meet the Experts: Christopher Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., a fitness and nutrition advisor at Garage Gym Reviews, Sergii Putsov, Ph.D., a fitness coach and ex-professional weightlifter, and Sergio Pedemonte, a certified personal trainer and owner of Your House Fitness.
Below, trainers explain how to use vibration plates, who they’re for, and the perks they can provide to your fitness journey.
The name speaks for itself: A vibration plate is a platform you can perform workouts on while it vibrates at various intensities to challenge your fitness and, ideally, make you stronger. The high-speed, whole-body vibrations intensify workouts by impacting your balance. Your body works extra hard to maintain stability, which creates involuntary muscle contractions that enhance muscle engagement, explains Christopher Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., a fitness and nutrition advisor at Garage Gym Reviews. The vibrations can be vertical (also known as linear), side-to-side, or multi-directional (also known as oscillating), adds Sergii Putsov, Ph.D., a fitness coach and former professional weightlifter.
Vibration plate benefits
“If you use a vibration plate, it may help with muscle toning, balance, mobility, and potentially muscle recovery,” says Mohr. It may also improve blood circulation, joint mobility, body awareness, and can “possibly support bone density in those at risk of osteoporosis,” he adds. A 2023 review found vibration therapy to be particularly helpful in improving bone density and postural control in postmenopausal women and geriatric populations. “However, it should always be used as a complement to other forms of exercise, not as a replacement,” Mohr concludes. In general, vibration plates can be used as a strength training routine adder, especially for older adults. “Adults should do at least two muscle-strengthening exercises per week,” says Putsov. Evidence on vibration plates’ efficacy for weight loss and overall fitness is mixed/limited.
How to use a vibration plate
There is a learning curve to this piece of equipment, and that’s totally OK. Sergio Pedemonte, a certified personal trainer and owner of Your House Fitness recommends beginning with the lowest vibration level available on your plate and only performing simple standing exercises like arm circles, hip hinges, and arm raises. After you get used to the machine, you can slowly increase its intensity and switch up your exercises. For example: “You can move into squats and start incorporating dumbbell workouts,” he adds.
Vibration plate safety is crucial and working out with one requires a flat, stable surface in an environment with sufficient space, Putsov says. “Give yourself about 45 to 60 seconds to allow your body to adjust to the vibrations. Start your preferred exercise once you feel you are stable enough,” he concludes.

Best Linear Vibration Plate
VT VT007 Vibration Plate
Pros
90-day free return, 10-year warranty
Comes with remote and hand straps
Simple set up and durable construction
Cons
Low vibration mode may still be quite intense
This machine’s vibration mechanism moves up and down on a straight axis, which makes it a linear vibration plate as opposed to an oscillating one. “Linear motion is ideal for high-intensity strength training,” Putsov says, as it may challenge your balance a bit more.
Reviewers love that it’s basic, durable, and effective. “I’m 64 years old, in pretty good shape, but I’ve had knee pains for several years, in varying degrees,” one wrote. “I’ve seen unmistakable improvement since I began using the VT007. I’ve also experienced relief from nagging aches in the neck, shoulders, and back. This vibration therapy is immediately soothing and calming, and subtlety effective in the long term.”

How to choose the best vibration plate
Consider size and storage: Some vibration plates are extremely heavy—so they would need a place in your home or gym as a piece of stationary equipment. Others are lighter and more portable. Assess your needs and shop accordingly.
Check its settings: “You should look into settings of each machine including programmed modes and speeds,” Pedemonte says. “If you can, try one first before buying one.” Its best if the speeds are adjustable, Putsov adds.
Pay attention to vibration type and weight capacity: “Plates with oscillating motion are ideal for flexibility, balance, and low-impact workouts, while those with linear motion are ideal for high-intensity strength training,” says Putsov. He adds that it’s also important to check the weight limit to “ensure the plate can support your body weight comfortably.”

How often should you use a vibration plate?
“For the best results, start with shorter amount of time, for about 10 minutes and gradually increase to 15 to 30 minutes, about three times a week,” says Mohr. “Avoid overusing it to reduce the risk of injury.”
